Leadership Series

Learn about the importance of Leadership in the updated ISO 9001:2015 (QMS) and ISO 14001:2015 (EMS) standards and how to reap the greatest rewards from certification.

What’s new?

The updated international Quality Management System Standard (QMS) ISO 9001:2015 and Environmental Management System Standard (EMS) ISO 14001:2015, incorporating the Management System High Level Structure as defined by Annex SL, provides an opportunity for companies to use certification of their Quality and Environmental Management Systems to drive better business performance.

Why is Leadership important for my organisation?

Leadership creates the ability to create a clear vision; the capacity to share the vision with others and motivate them to follow; to provide the structure, tools and information that will allow others to be successful in pursuing the vision and governing the risks and conflicts that arise when following the vision.

There are now more areas where leaders need to demonstrate their involvement and engagement with the management system, such as:

  • ensuring its requirements are integrated into the organisations’ business processes,
  • promoting awareness of the process approach,
  • assuring the management system achieves its intended results,
  • supporting other relevant management roles to demonstrate their leadership,
  • ensuring that the policy is communicated, understood and applied by the entire organisation.

This greater focus on Leadership will require greater accountability from top management which can be defined as decision makers at the highest level, such as the C-suite or board members. They will be required to demonstrate a visible understanding of the business context, addressing risks and opportunities and greater accountability tied to closer links between the management system and product/service quality and in the case of ISO 14001:2015, environmental performance.
